Sonya Sklaroff is inspired by the Manhattan landscape, illuminating water towers, streetlights, rooftops and other basic elements of the city’s vast infrastructure with unconventional prominence. Each painting is an experiment in composition, investigating the balance of light and dark, complementary color, and negative space. Avoiding traditional “postcard views” of the city, Sklaroff’s atypical images of New York are skillfully crafted to evoke the metaphysical from the mundane. Embodying the city’s vivacious reputation while embracing calm and solemnity, her work transcends mere depiction and provides a poetic interpretation. Sklaroff creates paintings of New York with vitality and unnerving force… paintings that inspire and surprise… paintings that alter our perception in subtle and lasting ways.
