Inspired by the New England foliage, the “Amour en Rouge” collection of works pry into the relationship between color and movement. Through her mastery of color, van Gool transforms her personages into passionate figures, surrounded by fields of maddening reds and oranges. The compositions feature a recurring theme of solitary dancers, pairs, or small groups, predominantly focusing on strong female figures with striking coal black hair. Clad in vibrant red dresses that hint at glimpses of marble-like shoulders and arms, these women exude a sense of emotional intensity, as if embodying a passionate melody that demands expressive motion. Van Gool’s distinctive artistic style is characterized by a dramatic use of color that infuses her work with a unique and mesmerizing sense of movement. What initially catches the viewer’s eye evolves into an abstract and passionate environment, s, as the characters she creates in effect lose themselves, consumed by the hot, dry matter of the world, like fallen, brittle leaves about to burst into flame.
